Workshop: Sewing Machines 101

In this workshop, we will cover the basics about your sewing machine, including how to wind a bobbin, how to thread the machine, and what the basic settings on your machine mean. Once you set your machine up, we will practice sewing a straight line and backstitching. You will walk away from this workshop with a scrunchie that you made yourself using these basic sewing skills!

This is a BYOM (Bring Your Own Machine) workshop and sewing machines will not be provided.

Workshop: Intro to Quilting: Foundation Paper Piecing

In this class, participants will be introduced to foundation paper piecing, which is a quilting method where fabric is sewn onto a paper template. Participants will choose from a few provided block patterns and make one 6-8” quilt block. You will leave with either a completed pot holder, or one block to take home and start a bigger quilt! We will also go over adding batting, top stitching, and bias tape to finish a quilt.

Make & Take: Making Mending Kits for Unhoused Community

Drop by (no sign-up required!) our Community Space at Austin Creative Reuse to help us assemble  mending kits for unhoused people in our community. These little mending kits, all contained in a reused Altoid tin, will have everything one needs to give their clothing a longer life - essential when one's ability to buy new clothing or access mending services is limited.

At this drop-by event, you'll help us cut fabric patches, thread buttons onto safety pins, and assemble all the pieces needed for each kit. Come and help for 10 minutes or a whole hour - up to you! This event is suitable for volunteers of all ages - so it's a great opportunity to get the whole family involved!

Workshop: Learn to Sew a Box Top

In this workshop, participants will learn to measure, draft and sew a simple box top! The instructor will also talk about different ways to finish the neckline, different types of seams, how to embellish the top further and more!

This workshop is great for beginner sewers who want to make clothing but are a tad intimidated by the process. A basic knowledge of running a sewing machine is required. Our goal is for participants to leave with their projects as close to finished as possible, with all the skills needed to finish at home. Fabric and thread will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own!

Taller: Aprenda a coser un mandil

¡En este taller en español, aprenderá a coser su propio mandil usando un patrón! Cubriremos cómo cortar y ensamblar un proyecto de principio a fin. Los participantes ya deberían estar familiarizados con cómo usar su máquina de coser y cómo coser una puntada recta. Esta clase es un excelente seguimiento para aquellos que han asistido anteriormente a el taller "Aprenda a usar su máquina de coser" en ACR. Este taller es sólo para hablantes de español con fluidez.

In this Spanish-spoken workshop, you will learn how to sew your own apron using a pattern! We will cover how to cut and assemble a project from start to finish. Participants should already be familiar with how to use their sewing machine and how to sew a straight stitch. This class is a great follow up for those who have attended a Learn How to Use a Sewing Machine workshop at ACR previously. This workshop is for fluent Spanish speakers only.

Workshop: Upcycled Patchwork & Mending

Want to kickstart your journey with sustainable slow fashion? This workshop will demonstrate how to utilize upcycled fabric to create wearable pieces of art! Participants will learn how to use fabric scraps to create applique letters, motifs and patches. While hand sewing knowledge is helpful, it is not required!

Patches can be used to cover stains, holes or old logos on clothing. This class is the perfect way to revamp old clothing in your wardrobe. Please bring a T-Shirt, Crew neck, or other clothing item to work on. Note that thicker items (denim, canvas, corduroy, etc.) will be more difficult to hand sew through.

Feel free to bring your own letters or images to trace, but we will also have some in class!

Community Event: Maker Pfest

Enjoy an afternoon of demos and hands-on activities with artists and makers from the Central Texas area. 

While you're there, get information about the Pflugerville Library’s Summer Reading Program. Stop by the Pfab Lab for a tour, see a 3D printer demo, and visit the children's area to enjoy different crafts.

All ages are welcome to attend. No registration required and this event is free.

ACR will be at the event with two free crafts- Imagination Creation (freestyle crafting project, attendees can create whatever their heart desires!) and Fabric Sample Bags (Our lovely volunteers will sew the heavy-duty fabric samples into simple bags/purses in advance, which attendees can then decorate using ribbon, buttons, lace/trim, etc to create a beautiful and functional masterpiece).

Workshop- Sew Intensive! 2-Day Workshop

Learn how to make clothes like a professional! This class is led by a Master Tailor with a passion for sewing and education. This is a basic sewing class in which students will learn professional finishing techniques for apparel industry standard clothing, including pattern cutting, sewing, adding trim and printing graphics onto their completed items.

Students will choose to make a button-up shirt, elastic waist shorts, a hooded sweatshirt, jogger pants/shorts or a wrapped shirt. Premade patterns made in their size will be prepared beforehand.

This workshop is appropriate for ages 13+ only (yes, adults are welcome!)
